Special Law Enforcement Officers (Elementary, Middle /Junior High, and High School)

  • Must be a law enforcement officer who retired in good standing, less than 65 years of age, who previously served as a fully-trained police officer in any municipality, county, agency of this state, bi-state agency, or federal agency, and must be living in New Jersey.
  • The officer must have served as a full-time police officer within three years of appointment as a Class Three SLEO.
  • The officer must be physically capable of performing the functions of the position.
  • The officer must pass a medical examination.
  • The officer must pass a psychological examination.
  • The officer must pass a Drug Test pursuant to the Attorney General's Law Enforcement Drug Testing Policy.
  • The officer must possess a New Jersey Police Training Commission basic police officer certification or New Jersey State Police Academy certification.
  • The officer must also complete the training course for the school resource officers (SROs) within 12 months of being appointed.
  • The officer must have a valid permit to carry a handgun issued pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:58-4.
  • The SLEO must provide the Superintendent of Schools with documentation supporting compliance with the requirements of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-6(1), including, but not limited to, a copy of an identification card issued by the Superintendent of the State Police permitting the retired officer to carry a handgun in accordance with N.J.S.A. 2C:39-6(1)(4). The identification card is valid for one year from the date of issuance, and shall be carried at all times by the SLEO while the officer is carrying a handgun.
    SLEOs are not authorized to carry handguns in school buildings or on school grounds beyond the hours of the officer's workday or work assignment.

  • Criminal history background check and proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal resident alien status
