Nature and Scope of Job: The Director of Humanities is responsible for creating a building culture and climate in line with the Philip’s Academy mission and vision that ensures the academic and social-emotional success of students. The Director of Humanities provides teachers with coaching and feedback on the implementation of their literacy lessons, as well as writes literacy curricula and implements evidence-based practices. Further, at times, the Director of Humanities also provides direct instruction to students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Research and provide staff support that will improve teaching and learning – including: teaching strategies, assessment of literacy skills, interpretation, and use of assessment

2. Set vision and direction for Humanities instruction at Philip’s by analyzing student data

3. Oversee ELA and SS curriculum

4. Provide educational leadership in the the development of curriculum and the implementation of instructional programs of the district, including the evaluation of classrooms and the use of various strategies and materials consistent with research on learning and child growth and development.

5. Research and provide information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative literacy practices through various activities such as: individual discussions (informal and formal), coaching sessions, demonstration lessons with pre- and post- discussion/analysis, study groups, staff meetings, and professional development

6. Provides support and assistance to all classroom teachers in the full implementation of the district’s adopted ELA program through MAP score analysis/interpretation

7. Provides on-site staff development to ensure that teachers are knowledgeable about program components and understand the instructional design of how the program meets the standards (alignment)

8. Assists teachers in building an interactive classroom

9. Serves as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement for all

10. Participation in collaborative grade-level meetings to assist in the analysis and utilization of assessment data to improve the focus of instructional planning and student

11. Assists grade-level teams in setting goals for improved instruction and RTI

12. Meets regularly (weekly) with the principal to review benchmarks and established data points to assess student progress towards established instructional

13. The Director of Humanities coaches elementary general education, middle school education, and specialized teachers in the area of literacy.

14. Provide orientation for new staff and ongoing opportunities for effective professional development that address the needs of the individual and the instructional program, including workshops, visitations, demonstration lessons, and team teaching in which the staff shares successful practices and strategies.

1. Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.

2. Performs other duties not limited but including lunch duties, recess duties, and others within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Hold a New Jersey Principal, Supervisor, or School Administrator certification.
  • Master’s degree with at least 5 years of experience in the assigned area.
  • Hold a valid New Jersey Teacher Certificate
  • Applicants must demonstrate cultural sensitivity, ability to communicate with parents and students, have mastery of subject matter content, hold high expectations of students and adults and possess basic understanding of adult learning theory
  • Possess strong leadership and team skills.
  • Have superb organizational and self-management skills and be able to handle multiple responsibilities effectively; have strong planning and execution skills; be a goal-oriented and effective problem-solver.

  • Be dedicated to doing whatever it takes to help all of the school’s students achieve academic success.
  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
  • Current residency in New Jersey approved residency waiver or candidate agrees to obtain residency within one year of employment
  • Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students.

  • Excellent teamwork, work ethic, and organizational skills.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and verbally. Bilingual is a plus.
  • Possess excellent integrity, a gentle spirit, and demonstrate strong moral character and initiative.
  • Demonstrate technological abilities: word processing, data management, and informational retrieval.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development.
  • Be CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogen certified or obtain certification upon hire.
  • Complete a Tuberculosis test and physical and provide a physician’s documentation of both.
  • Be able to kneel, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry students up to 70lbs.
  • Have dependable transportation.
