How to Network as an Introvert

Networking involves putting yourself out there and making the first move in social interactions. For an extrovert, this is just another regular day. For an introvert, however, this is their worst nightmare. Networking can be complex for someone who does not like to socialize as much, or it takes more energy and does not come naturally. The main thing is to find the networking technique that works for you. The average person is not a networking expert--everyone can learn it! This article will cover some strategies that could help introverts network.

While traditional networking might be intimidating for an introvert, there are many ways to network without jumping into the deep end. Introverts tend to be more observant and good listeners. Using introverts' strengths to establish connections will go a long way in making the process as pain-free as possible. Here are some ways to ease into the networking process as an introvert.

Use social media

Social media is a great networking tool because it makes it possible to connect with people you might not have in person and opens you up to new connections. Using social media is an excellent way to network when you are an introvert. By doing this, introverts are able to network in a more comfortable environment. Social media allows you to interact in your own time, process information, and avoid crowds. Building a social media presence representing your identity and career goals enables like-minded individuals to find you online.

Research before a networking event

It is always advisable to research the people that will be attending a networking event, but as an introvert, you can use this information to ease the anxiety during the event. By researching the event and the people that may be there, you can create conversation points to guide your conversations. Being prepared will make things run more smoothly and increase your chances of building successful connections.

Reach out to your fellow extroverts

Networking does not have to be done alone. Think about the connections that you already have. Chances are you will know an extrovert, and that extrovert can help connect you with more people. This way can ease you into networking before you get more comfortable doing it on your own. This is also a networking technique that anyone can use because it is a common way to grow your connections.

Reach out after an event

Networking events are a great way to build connections, but they only work if you stay in touch after the event. Make sure to send a message to people you want to keep in touch with after the event.

Practice

As with anything, practice makes perfect. It also builds confidence, which is one of the most critical things during networking. By building confidence in yourself, you will be able to network easily over time. Go to more networking events, or make an effort in your everyday life to connect with people. Networking does not have to be reserved for career purposes but for your personal life as well. The hardest part is getting through the initial anxieties that exist when going out of your comfort zone.
